THE ARTHOUSE
SPIRIT BRAND
Dictador has been crafting investment-grade, aged rum in the heart of Colombia for over a century. Their heritage and rebellious mindset drive them to positively impact the future.
A brand that rebels against the ordinary, a fusion of extremely rare Dictador rum and contemporary art, strengthened by the digital age.
The history of Dictador
The rum is named after Severo Arango y Ferro, who was nicknamed “El Dictador.” In the 1700s, he oversaw trade between Spain and the colonies. By the end of the 18th century, Severo Arango y Ferro traveled to Cartagena de Indias in Nueva Granada (today’s Colombia). He had plans to improve tax collection for Spain in the Spanish colonies in the Americas. His personality was quickly recognized, and he soon became known as DICTADOR. During his time in Nueva Granada, he fell in love at first sight (and taste) – he discovered rum there. His dedication and affection for this tropical beverage led him to become a key supplier of exotic sugarcane spirits, which at that time were the currency of the region.
The company was founded by one of his descendants, Don Julio Arango y Parra, in 1913.

Production
The Dictador distillery is located in Cartagena de Indias on the Caribbean Sea in Colombia.
Dictador rum is produced from sugar cane honey rather than molasses. In the rum production process, depending on the type, fermentation is exposed to the so-called “Honey” – juice obtained from the first pressing of sugar cane. Later, distillation takes place in steel columns or copper alembics. The distillate obtained in this way goes to oak barrels, where it is aged. It is here that the rum receives its final “cut,” shaping its taste and bouquet.
Due to restrictions imposed by the government to protect its own distilleries, Dictador rum is sold in only 2% of Colombia. Less than 1% of the total production reaches the Colombian market.
