Lombard Scotch Whisky

Creator of Storm Blended Malt

Known for adding value to a global market, Lombard continues to invest in the Scotch whiskey industry and is today unrivaled in its stock of aged and rare whiskies. The formidable and growing portfolio of Blended Scotch Whisky, is a perfect compliment to its rare, single cask, single malt. Today, Lombard is in a stronger position than ever to meet the increasing global demand for its whiskies.

Lombard is a family business with almost 300 years of experience in the wine and whiskey trade.

Family history

Early records (Edward the Confessor 1042-1066) show the family to be from the village of Chebenhale. At this time the Chibnall name was "de Chebenhale". After the Norman invasion, there is a known lineage to a son of William I. In 1351, King John I of England changed his residence to Sherington in Buckinghamshire and kept a cottage at Chebenhale as a pied-a-terre. The royal connection is shown in the family crest by a ducal coronet engulfed on the dragon's neck – a sign of royal blood! At this time the family was established as "Chibnall of Astwood".

In 1762 records showed that the Chibnall family owned a wine merchant, a cooper and the local pub. Several predecessors were wine merchants, but interests expanded via marriage, to cork plantations in Portugal and a cork manufacturing business in London called G.Lombard. The marriage resulted in the surname being Lombard-Chibnall.

Early in the 20th century, Henry Lombard-Chibnall married Alice Robinson from the brewery and soft drinks business. Brewers bottled beer, as well as gin, vodka, port and this became the early connection to the later start of Lombard Scotch Whisky.

Lombard Scotch Whiskey was founded in the 1960s when the company began cask-filling at the distilleries and storing, as well as bottling, whiskey from its own warehouses. The company entered the market as suppliers of bulk whiskey to mixers. Administration was established on the Isle of Man, a Scottish island between Ireland and Scotland, and a solid inventory base was developed.

Lombard is a respected independent bottler of non-chill-filtered single malts, and their stock of aged and rare single malts is both extensive and varied. This includes whiskeys from now defunct distilleries and lesser known malts. The 1990s saw the development of the malt whiskey category and Lombard broadening its interests into packaged goods – a strategic move to control the use of mature stock.
